Indicators that matter: moving averages, RSI, MACD, volume

How the four indicators worth using actually work, how to combine them without redundancy, and why divergence is not a signal on its own.

Moving averages: the trend filter

A moving average smooths price into a line you can trade around. The 20-period EMA tracks short-term momentum, the 50 defines the intermediate trend and the 200 marks the long-term regime. Their main value is as a filter: only take longs while price holds above the 200, only take shorts below it, and most of your worst trades disappear.

Crossovers lag by definition. Use them for context, not for entries.

RSI: momentum, not a reversal button

The Relative Strength Index measures the speed of recent gains against losses on a 0 to 100 scale. Above 70 is called overbought and below 30 oversold, but strong trends stay overbought for weeks, and shorting purely because RSI is high is a reliable way to donate money.

The useful readings are structural: RSI holding above 40 in pullbacks confirms an uptrend, and bearish divergence β€” price making a higher high while RSI makes a lower high β€” warns that momentum is fading. Divergence is a warning, not an entry; wait for structure to break too.

MACD and volume tools

MACD compares two moving averages and plots the difference as a histogram, making acceleration and deceleration visible. Rising bars mean momentum is expanding; shrinking bars mean the move is tiring even if price still rises.

VWAP, the volume-weighted average price, is where the average intraday participant is positioned. Institutions use it as a fair-value anchor: price above VWAP with rising volume favours longs, and reclaiming VWAP after losing it is a classic intraday trigger.

Combining without duplicating

Three indicators measuring the same thing give you false confidence, not confirmation. Pick one for trend, one for momentum and one for participation β€” for example the 200 EMA, RSI and volume or VWAP β€” and delete the rest. A clean chart with two tools beats a rainbow with eight.

FAQ

What RSI settings should I use?

The default 14 periods is fine. Changing settings to make signals appear more often does not create an edge.

Is VWAP useful in 24/7 crypto markets?

Yes, anchored to the daily session or to a significant event such as a listing or a swing low.
